BYS Concert 2026: Press Start Ⓐ ticket sales are now live!
The Brunei Youth Symphony (BYS) welcomes young musicians who are interested in developing their orchestral skills in a supportive and collaborative environment. Prospective members are invited to submit an online intake form, which allows the BYS artistic team to better understand each applicant’s musical background, experience and ability. Information provided helps ensure appropriate placement within the orchestra and supports balanced ensemble development.
Depending on current membership needs and programme requirements, applicants may be:
Offered a place in the orchestra
Invited for a short audition or assessment
Placed on a waiting list for future intakes
Auditions or assessments, when required, are conducted in a friendly and constructive manner and are used solely to determine suitable repertoire level and ensemble placement—not as a barrier to participation. Successful applicants will receive further details regarding rehearsal schedules, membership expectations, and upcoming programmes. BYS strives to make the intake process transparent and accessible, and encourages interested musicians to apply even if they are unsure of their eligibility.
BYS welcomes musicians up to 35 years of age, including school students, university students, and young working adults, who have prior experience on a string instrument. While formal music grades are helpful, they are not a strict requirement. Applications are assessed holistically, taking into account musical readiness, commitment, and ensemble balance.
Applicants who are unsure of their eligibility are encouraged to apply.
Positions are primarily available across BYS’s string sections, including violin, viola, cello, and double bass. When available, BYS also welcomes applications for other orchestral instrument sections, subject to programme needs and ensemble balance.
Applicants interested in learning or transitioning to a second instrument (for example, violinists wishing to learn viola) may indicate their interest in the intake form and will be considered based on current orchestra requirements.
Prospective members are encouraged to review the intake information before submitting their application.
BYS is committed to supporting young musicians while respecting their academic and personal commitments.
Rehearsals are scheduled with consideration for school and examination periods.
Musical development is balanced with well-being, teamwork, and personal growth.
Auditions, when required, are conducted in a supportive and encouraging environment.
Clear communication regarding schedules, performances, and expectations is provided in advance.
Parents are welcome to contact BYS for further information or clarification regarding their child’s participation.
