Founded in June 2024 by a group of passionate musicians, the Brunei Youth Symphony (BYS) is Brunei Darussalam’s first youth symphony orchestra, created to provide young musicians with meaningful access to orchestral training and performance. The establishment of BYS marked a significant step in the development of Brunei’s classical music landscape, offering a structured platform for young string players to rehearse, perform, and grow together.
BYS made its official public debut in December 2024 and quickly became an active contributor to the nation’s cultural life. Within its first year, the orchestra was invited to perform at several prominent occasions, including Brunei’s 40th National Day celebration, a memorial service hosted by the Russian Embassy, and His Majesty Sultan Haji Hassanal Bolkiah Mu’izzaddin Waddaulah’s 79th birthday celebration. These early milestones reflected both the commitment of its musicians and the growing recognition of youth orchestral music in Brunei.
From the outset, BYS has looked beyond national borders to ensure its development aligns with international standards. The orchestra entered into a five-year Memorandum of Understanding (MoU) with the Global Strings Federation (GSF) and established affiliations with the Singapore Youth Philharmonic Orchestra (SYPO), enabling access to mentorship, artistic exchange, and collaborative learning.
Today, BYS consists of over 40 young string musicians, united by a shared commitment to musical growth and community engagement. While still in its early years, the orchestra continues to expand its activities, repertoire, and partnerships - laying the foundation for a sustainable and inclusive orchestral tradition in Brunei.
